Why is this important?
Over 450,000 members of New Jersey’s immigrant community will benefit from the Motor Vehicle Commission’s proposed amendment to their regulations to implement the driver’s licenses law that expanded access to licenses to all New Jerseyans, regardless of their immigration status.
Show the MVC, that you support this proposed amendment by submitting a public comment. We have until April 17th to submit our comments of support.
The MVC’s current regulations require immigrants without status to have either an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or provide a Social Security Administration (SSA) letter of Social Security Number (SSN) ineligibility to obtain a driver’s license. The proposed amendment will make it so that individuals can simply provide an affidavit on a form provided by the MVC that attests to their ineligibility for an SSN.
This law, which passed in 2019, is a major victory for immigrants in New Jersey who will enjoy expanded access to driver’s licenses and non-driver IDs. However, we know that for many members of our communities, interacting with the federal government in order to apply for an ITIN or obtain an SSA letter would be a major deterrent. This proposed amendment makes it so our community members no longer need these documents. Now, it needs your support to be adopted!

We are seeing more and more families harmed because a parent and provider cannot access a driver’s license in New Jersey.
Immigrant families are separated because not having a driver’s license makes them vulnerable to deportation.
Driver’s licenses for all qualified drivers is a common-sense policy that will allow more residents, regardless of immigration status, to access a driver's license and prevent families from being separated in New Jersey.
No more delays. Inaction is unacceptable.
